Thank you so much for joining our Back-to-School Workshop: Engaged Parents, Successful Students! It was such a joy to spend the evening with you and other Oakland families, learning together and building community.
Here’s a quick look back at what we shared:
Being a Home Champion
Katya Caballero, a FIA parent leader who has volunteered in her children’s schools for 14 years, shared: “What I enjoy most is being involved in my children’s education. It fills me with pride that they know I am a present mom, always looking out for their wellbeing.” We talked about small daily habits, like asking your child about their day and celebrating both the wins and the struggles, that help kids feel supported at home.
Being a School Partner
Paulina Rodriguez shared a powerful personal story: “My parents didn’t speak the language, so I was unable to attend many events at school. Now that I have my son, I want to be there for him, so we can open the doors to success together.” We practiced what it looks like to build an authentic partnership with your child’s teacher, not just a quick hello.
Being a Community Advocate
Marlyn Lemus, another FIA parent leader, reminded us: “I think every parent would like to know, every day, how our children are doing. Being a community advocate helps strengthen opportunities for all children.” We talked about why school board elections matter, and heard that Families in Action is hosting a School Board Candidate Forum on October 1st, 6-8pm, where you can hear directly from candidates.
