Step-by-Step through the Enrollment Process

Choosing the best Oakland public school for your child starts before school applications open and continues after. To help you make sense of it all, we put together this one-page overview. If you’re an Oakland parent or guardian (or student helping their parent/guardian), or you work with families who should have this information, please print and share, e-mail it, share on social media, and as always let us know if you have feedback to improve it.

Early Childhood Programs

To be eligible for Kindergarten next school year (2025-2026), your child must turn 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024.

To be eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) next school year (2025-2026), your child must turn 4 years old on or before September 1, 2024.

TK is the first of a two-year kindergarten experience designed to meet the specific needs of four and five-year-old children.

If your child is too young to enroll in TK and/or Kindergarten for the school year, please use BANANAS’ Childcare Search Tool to find an early childhood program. For questions or help call BANANAS’ at 510-658-0381.
